📍 Information:Historically, snake images were often used as general medical emblems. The snake cult that emerged during the periods of animalism and totemism characterized snakes as symbols of evil, cunning, and guile, but also of goodness, immortality, wisdom, and knowledge. In Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC, the snake was often depicted with Ningishzida, considered the god of fertility and healing. Snakes were also depicted in ancient times in connection with medicine, initially alone, later with various objects. From the 8th century BC, the staff of Asclepius became one of the symbols of medicine (not to be confused with the caduceus, which in some countries also became a symbol of medicine much later). The bowl combined with a snake (uschka), although depicted separately, began to appear in the 7th-5th centuries BC in association with the goddesses of health, Hygieia and Salute. The entwinement of a snake around a cup or amphora in ancient images occurs even later. The snake, in combination with other objects, was used as an emblem of medicine even later.
