The rules of Shut the Box

The name of the game sums up its objective perfectly, as the English expression ‘shut the box’ means exactly that.

That's exactly what you'll have to try to do to win the game!

Shut the Box is played by 2 to 4 players. Players take turns. Roll the dice and add up the two sides. Then close the flap or flaps corresponding to the sum obtained by the dice.

Example: The first die shows 4, the second shows 5. The sum is 9. You therefore have several choices for closing the flaps:

Close only flap no. 9.

Close flaps no. 5 and no. 4.

Each player must play until they can no longer close any valves. For example, if the sum of the two dice is 9 but only valves 3 and 4 remain to be closed, the player is stuck.

Their turn then ends. Their points are counted by calculating the sum of the valves that remain open (in this case, 7 points). A game of Shut the Box is played in 4 rounds.

The player with the most points loses the game.
