**The Chains of Duty**

Demetrian Titus stood among the crimson ruins of Graia, his bolt pistol still smoking. Around him lay the twisted corpses of Orks, their green flesh already bloating in the toxic air. The forge world burned, its foundries torn open like gutted prey.

"Captain." Sidonus approached, the veteran's weathered face grim behind his helmet's vox-grille. "The xenos are broken. The world is ours again."

Titus nodded, but felt no triumph. Only duty fulfilled. He had been forged in the trials of the Ultramarines, shaped by the Codex Astartes into a weapon of the Emperor's will. Two centuries of war had taught him that victory was merely the prelude to the next battle.

The Warp flickered at the edge of his vision. Nemeroth, the sorcerer who led this invasion, had fled into the immaterium. Titus pursued without hesitation, following the daemon prince into a realm that should have shattered his mind. Yet he endured. He fought. He killed Nemeroth with his hands, tearing the abomination apart even as reality itself screamed around him.

When he emerged, Leandros was waiting.

"You survived the Warp uncorrupted," his brother-marine said, suspicion thick in his voice. "No loyal servant could do such a thing."

Titus understood then. The same strength that had saved Graia would condemn him. Leandros saw only deviation from the Codex, only potential heresy in what should have destroyed any Space Marine. The Inquisition came, their black ships descending like carrion birds.

Chaplain Cassius interceded, but even he could not prevent what followed. Titus surrendered his armor, his weapons, his honor. He had fought with distinction in the Zeist Campaign, led his brothers through the fires of Thrax, earned his captaincy through blood and sacrifice. None of it mattered now.

The Inquisition's chambers were cold steel and colder scrutiny. They peeled back his mind, searching for the taint of Chaos. They found nothing but duty, rigid and unbreaking. Years passed in that purgatory between condemnation and absolution.

When they finally released him, it was not to glory. The Ultramarines reassigned him—a punishment disguised as mercy. He would serve again, but the stain of suspicion would follow him like a shadow. His brothers would whisper. Some would doubt. Others would remember only that he had been investigated, not that he had been cleared.

Titus donned his armor once more, feeling its familiar weight settle onto his shoulders. The Imperium was vast and cruel, grinding its servants between duty and dogma. He had saved an entire world, and his reward was shame.

But he was still a Space Marine. Still an Ultramarine.

He would endure. He would fight. And when the Emperor demanded his life, he would give it without hesitation.

That was what it meant to know no fear.
